The Importance of Threads & Connectors

Threaded connectors are critical components of our systems and field operations.  Failure of a threaded connector joint can result in leaks, equipment damage, and injuries.  In time, will discuss types of threads and connectors as well as good practices and the importance of maintaining them.

Have you ever stopped to think about all of the different things that are held together and fastened using screw threads?  It is an ingenious concept believed to be invented in about 400BC.  One of the first applications of the screw was in presses for the extraction of oils from olives and juice from grapes.  The screw thread has been perfected over time and is now used and relied upon for numerous applications in our daily lives.

We often take these screw threads for granted since they are used all around us, and once connected, they usually stay connected as designed.  However, there are also threaded connections that we periodically need to unfasten and refasten.  For example, drill stem, hose fittings, and bolts and screws on mechanical connections.  Each time the screw threads are unfastened and refastened, there is a potential for wear or damage to the threads that are relied upon to secure the connection.  While the design of the threads may look simple, they rely on precision and there is actually quite a bit of engineering that goes into their design to ensure a secure connection.

Have you ever taken the time to take a close look at the condition of the screw threads that are used around you?  Have you ever been in the process of trying to screw a connection together and it stops or becomes difficult to turn?  Have you used a bigger tool or device to gain leverage and increase the torque?  Think about the reason that the connection might have seized up.  Is it the proper size or design?  Are the threads corroded, worn, or damaged?  Can the increased force cause damage to the threads and connection?
